![]() In 1991 Columbus introduced a new steel in the bicycle tubing industry. The steel was called Nivacrom and the first tubing made from it was named GENIUS. |
|
Not only was the
new steel superior to the others, but GENIUS also had Differential Butted Shape
butts (DBS) a feature never before done on any other tube! The shape of the butt actually follows the area of the tube where most of the stress is. It comes in a different shape on different places on the tubes, and depending on it - it drastically varies in weight! Columbus made butted ends on GENIUS shorter, so the whole set was the first one strictly designed for TiG welding. |
|
TiG welding was
never easier and more beautiful, thanks to the addition of Niobium - the
alloying element - first time used in bicycle tubing for the purpose of helping
steel to re-crystallize to its perfect state after the welding. |
|
Fork blades were as well dedicated for TiG welding. The unicrown
shape allowed tire clearance to go up to 38mm, as shown on this Touring fork, and the blades would stay unbent - giving more
control over the bike steering. |
|
A wide selection of tube thicknesses and
diameters allowed GENIUS tubing to be used in many frame models, from world
class road racing to MTB, and Touring - like this frame. |
